Reduced
Hours at Town Hall for Summer
Effective
July 7 through August 29, Town Hall will be closed
on Fridays. Summer hours will be as follows:
New
Curbside Hauler as of July 1
The
Gill Selectboard voted at their June 9 meeting to
hire a new contractor to collect solid waste and
recycling in town. Beginning July 1, Alternative
Recycling Systems out of Northampton will provide
curbside collection for residents in Gill. Regular
trash and recycling pickups will remain on
Fridays—refuse must be placed curbside by 7:00
a.m.
Holiday scheduling will be a little different than
in the past. The pickup day will only change if a
holiday falls on a Friday; in which case pickup
will move to the following Monday. Since
Alternative’s first scheduled collection would
be on Friday, July 4th (Independence
Day), it will instead be on Monday, July 7th.
Independence
Day will be the only holiday this year that will
affect pickup.
Trash
stickers are still required and may be purchased
for $2 each at the Gill Mobil Station, Jan’s
Package Store, Upinngil Farm, or the Town Hall. As
is printed on the stickers, maximum bag weight is
limited to 35 pounds.
Maximum plastic or metal cans are limited
to 35 gallons, weight not exceeding 60 pounds.
Residents may use one sticker per bag or one per
can.
For
questions or complaints regarding pickup,
residents are encouraged to call Alternative
Recycling Systems directly at (413) 587-4005.

Fluorescent
Bulb Recycling at Town Hall
Compact
fluorescent bulbs cannot be placed in the trash
because they contain small amounts of mercury
vapor. To assist residents in properly disposing
of fluorescent bulbs, the town hall now has
collection boxes. The fee for disposing of a
compact, u tube, or circle bulb is $0.50 each; the
fee for disposing of a straight bulb is $0.50 for
a 4' lamp or $1.00 for an 8' lamp. Please see the
Franklin County Solid Waste Management District
flyer for more details.

Revenue
Sharing Proposal
Cities and towns across the
state are facing severe fiscal challenges. As the
following resources point out, a strong state-local
partnership is required to restore the fiscal health
of cities and towns and protect the future of
Massachusetts.
In
January 2008, the MMA produced an informational video/television
program that presents the compelling case for a
comprehensive state tax revenue-sharing policy. The
program features interviews with key local leaders as
well as leading economists, all of whom recognize the
fiscal crisis facing cities and towns, and the
critical importance of local fiscal health to the
sustainability of the state’s economy and quality of
life.
